Choosing a Baby Monitor

Though not as important as choosing a name, choosing a baby monitor should not be taken lightly by expecting parents. Just as one name is chosen from an infinite list of potential names, parents must research a wide variety of audio monitors, video monitors and even movement monitors to find the baby monitor that suits their needs.

Determining how it will be used will narrow the field of potential baby monitors. Perhaps a couple wants a baby monitor for a child's safety. A sensory movement monitor may be needed. To record all the sounds and movements of a young life discovering its surroundings, a video monitor would be ideal.

Types of Baby Monitors

The most common type of monitor is the simple audio monitor. These transmit the sounds of the child to a receiver that the parents can take anywhere within range of the transmitter. These are especially convenient for providing peace of mind while accomplishing daily chores.

Video monitors are also available if parents also wish to see the movements of their child. Video monitors may play on a small receiver; some may be wired directly to a television or home computer.

If a child suffers from respiratory ailments or is at a higher risk of SID, a movement monitor may be a good choice. The movement monitors may consist of the normal transmitter-receiver setup, but they also include a sensory pad. This hypersensitive pad will detect any lack of movement and alert the parents. Movement monitors can provide a great sense of reassurance for parents of at risk children.

After determining the type of baby monitor needed, a couple can decide what, if any, special features they need, such as multiple cameras for video monitors. A simple audio baby monitor may suffice, but if more features are needed, there are plenty of options available for parents.
